New Kids on the Coffee Block

It’s so exciting to me when I see new coffee shops open or when I discover coffee shops that I didn’t know about. Today’s post is all about 2 new coffee shops in what I call the coffee hub of Durban – Florida Road. The 3rd coffee shop has been open for a while but I had not as yet visited it. So sit back (hopefully with a cup of coffee) and read about these must visit coffee shops. I was joined by my sister Carryn for this caffeine filled journey which we did at the beginning of January. I hope I have managed to answer questions you have about the coffee shops. Please let me know if I need to add in any other information.

coffee shops

This small and intimate coffee shop opened on 30 November 2019 at 187 Montpelier Road which runs adjacent to Florida Road. The coffee shop does not have any indoor seating as it is situated on the verandah of the beautiful turreted building. You can either choose to sit there or at a table in the garden. My sister and I chose to sit on the verandah near the coffee counter so that I could take photos of the barista making our cappuccinos. There was a small delay in the making of our cappuccinos when the barista discovered that a new batch of milk was not as fresh as expected, but that didn’t faze us. It was an extremely hot day with a glorious blue sky so we sat and chatted and watched people pass by. In addition to the 2 cappuccinos we decided to order brownies as they always pair so well with coffee. The coffee was perfectly prepared (correct drinking temperature) and beautifully presented in a ceramic cup with wood saucer. The brownie was squidgy and deliciously chocolatey. Boston Brew is the perfect place to meet with friends for a coffee catch up or to do some work on your laptop.

Milk & Honey opened in December 2019 and you will find them at 113 Florida Road. The coffee shop is an extension of the Olive Tree Church. It is a very spacious area and not overcrowded with seating so you don’t have to do the squeeze past any tables. They also have a comfortable couch which my sister and I loved. She made a quick beeline there while I ordered our cappuccinos (and took photos of the barista). A well prepared cappuccino made by a passionate barista and the cappuccino was at drinking temperature. We didn’t order anything to eat as our next stop would be for lunch. Milk & Honey is the perfect space to have a meeting or to have that chat with a close friend. Love the decor!

Humble Coffee opened up in their new premises at 21 Churchill Road, Durban in August 2019. This is not only a coffee shop but a coffee roastery and they are passionate about roasting and serving speciality coffee. My sister and I had been to 2 other coffee shops already but that didn’t stop us from ordering more coffee. I ordered a cappuccino and she decided that it was iced coffee time. What it was also time for was lunch. We both felt like having toasted sandwiches and the Grilled Cheese on Sourdough was chosen. It was an excellent choice as well. How was the cappuccino? Perfectly prepared and which I am glad to say often – at drinking temperature. Humble Coffee have coffee and coffee accessories for sale as well as interesting books and stationery. I bought a bag of their Love Blend coffee beans to enjoy at home. I need to visit again and see the coffee roaster in action.
