The Natal plum is a common and often conspicuous s The Natal plum is a common and often conspicuous shrub in coastal bush and sand dunes.
Name : Carissa macrocarpa
Common names : Natal Plum, Big Num-num, Grootnoem-noem, Amatungulu, umThungulu
It is a fast-growing, ornamental shrub that is wind resistant. It usually forms a dense thorny shrub but it can grow into a small tree up to 4 m high. It has Y- shaped thorns, the young branches are green and all parts of the plant exude a white, milky, non-toxic latex.
The flowers vary in size, up to 35 mm in diameter, are pure white and sweetly scented. The large, oval red fruit is edible and is rich in Vitamin C, magnesium and phosphorus. A pink dye can be made from the fruit. It flowers from spring to midsummer.
The name Carissa is derived from the Sanskrit corissa, the name of one of the Indian species. The specific name macrocarpa is derived from Greek : macro = large and carpus = fruit. The common name amatungulu is the Zulu name amaTungula meaning 'fruit of the umThungula'.
The shrub makes a good garden hedge and the fruits can be eaten raw or made into delicious jams or jellies. This ornamental shrub attracts birds and butterflies to the garden.

☕ 100% of the profit we generate goes to producers, directly through payments for coffee and through community-level investments."
☕ "If coffee can create community where it is consumed, we believe it should build communities where it is grown."
Early in 2023 Seam Coffee will be making a move to a new production premises - a 450m2 warehouse.
This warehouse space will have their Nespresso compatible capsule plant, carton (coffee) packaging, cupping lab, training facility, green coffee storage and a new Loring roaster.
