Looking for a destination coffee shop with lots of fresh air and a lovely view?
Take a drive to the wonderful Izimbali Coffee Cafe in Pietermaritzburg. This family run coffee shop on a farm does not only offer delicious food and coffee, but also activities for the exercise orientated.
Exercise : There is a trail run and mountain bike of 5, 10 or 15kms. If you don’t run or cycle you are able to walk the trail. It costs R10 to use the trail and you must sign up at the cafe first. Hot and sweaty after exercise? They have a shower for you to use inside the cafe.
Horse rides are 30 minutes within the property or you can go on an outride for an hour. If you have young children they will be happy to see the big jungle gym with 2 slides and there are also pony rides. Note : You must sign the indemnity form before going on a horse ride.
Seating : There are a choice of places to sit and enjoy your coffee and cake or your meal. There are tables inside the brightly painted coffee shop, tables just outside the shop and tables down on the deck. Wherever you choose to sit you will have a lovely view.
Food : There is a limited menu of breakfast and lunch options so it won’t take you long to pick the meal that’s right for you. My husband enjoyed his Farm Breakfast and I had to have the French Toast with Bacon (the plate had syrup drizzled onto it). They also serve sweet items like carrot cake. We saw a burger order go past our table that looked amazing and that is a definite order when visit again.
Coffee : We enjoyed our 1st cappuccino so much that we had to order a 2nd one. When chatting with Cath Price (the owner) we discovered that the barista is her 16 year old son and that she made the incredible pottery mugs. Seth Price was a complete coffee novice and received his training 1st at Barn Owl Coffee and then from Manna Roastery. Izimbali uses coffee beans from Manna Roastery.
Retail : There is a small retail section inside the coffee shop where you can buy Manna Roastery beans, Homemade Chilli Sauce, Pecan Shortbread and other items. We came home with chilli sauce and pecan shortbread.
Library : Forgot to bring a book with to read while drinking your coffee? No problem! There is a lot of books to choose from and they also have new kids and teen books for sale.
