Looking for accommodation with scenic views and cl Looking for accommodation with scenic views and close to Sterkfontein Dam?

Who : Windmill Farm

Where : At the top of the Oliviershoek Pass, R74, Northern Drakensberg

Accommodation : 8 self-catering cottages and 2 room only cottages

Parking : Vehicles can be parked next to your cottage

Wifi : Yes but it is not consistent and cellphone signals are also not consistent

Restaurant : The Border Post Restaurant is separate to Windmill Farm but is situated on the same property.

I stayed in a room only cottage which has 2 single beds, cupboard, small fridge, bathroom with shower, TV, kettle and a patio with table and chairs.

Breakfast, lunch and supper were eaten at The Border Post Restaurant but you can also order from them for delivery to your cottage. The food is amazing with generous portions.

I would definitely stay here again. The cottage was comfortable, clean and serviced daily. Shower had good water pressure and was lovely and warm. Soap, body wash and conditioning shampoo are supplied. They also supply tea, coffee and milk. They no longer have DSTV and if you wish to watch something you will need to log in to your own streaming service. This doesn't always work as the wifi needs an extra boost. But you aren't coming out here to watch TV are you?

Sterkfontein Dam : 15 minutes to the entrance

Bergville : 34 minutes

Golden Gate : About 40 minutes

Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre : 1 hour

Clarens : 1 hour and 25 minutes

I recently flew up to JHB to spend time with my si I recently flew up to JHB to spend time with my sister and was spoilt with a stay @tsogosuncom The Pivot situated @montecasino_za

"This is a pure Italian experience, inspired by the renaissance of a 15th-century villa in the Veneto region of Northern Italy."

The hotel has 194 rooms and I stayed in a Queen room that had a queen sized bed, bath and shower, TV, small fridge, kettle with tea and coffee, desk and chair and a balcony. The balcony overlooked the courtyard in the front of the hotel.

There are 2 dining options – all-day al fresco dining at La Terrazza on the deck overlooking a natural lake and Mediterranean dishes from the Punchinellos restaurant.

If you need more dining variety the Montecasino complex is just a short walk away.

After I had unpacked at the hotel my sister and I decided to choose a restaurant at Montecasino for supper. We eventually decided on Nikos Coalgrill Greek. After a delicious meal we went back to the hotel to have cocktails on the deck.

It is the 2nd time I have sat on the deck and enjoyed a cocktail as my sister took me there a few years ago. It's one of her favourite places for a cocktail.

The next morning I was woken up by a lot of very happy sounding birds. Most of them were Rose-Ringed Parakeets.

The Pivot only has instant coffee and tea as options for a morning hot drink so I had to settle for Rooibos tea.

I had my 1st cup of coffee at breakfast. They have a fabulous selection of food at breakfast and everything I chose was delicious. After breakfast I checked out and my sister and I went adventuring in JHB for a few hours before my late afternoon flight back home.

I enjoyed my stay at The Pivot. The hotel is beautifully decorated, the room was comfortable, breakfast and the cocktail was fabulous but the real winner for the hotel are the incredible staff.

Disclaimer : I did not pay for my stay as my sister had won a competition and gifted me the stay at the hotel.

My sister had been to Ana-Paula's before and she told me it was a must visit for the beautiful garden, house and food. She was right!

We had already had coffee at other places and it was a very hot day so we both had water. There are a lot of options on the menu for lunch and they had specials. We decided to order toasted sarmies - chicken mayo and the pastrami, cheese, mustard and gherkins on sourdough and with chips. We shared so we both got to taste the chicken and the pastrami sarmies. We both love chicken mayo but the pastrami was the definite winner with its flavour.

Sadly we were too full to have something sweet. I need to visit again as one of the very helpful waitresses said the chocolate cake is amazing. We did see a lot of cake boxes being taken home.

History : Look at the Boer War blockhouse next to Ana-Paula's.

My sister had visited Liut once before when they were in their previous premises so she was pleasantly surprised to see the wonderful new coffee shop.

We loved the entrance with the steps up to the door and the beautiful ceilings. We ordered cappuccinos and we had to have mini caramel cheesecakes. We sat at a table by the entrance and watched cars driving by and appreciated the lovely garden.

On a recent visit to see my sister in JHB we went On a recent visit to see my sister in JHB we went adventuring in Krugersdorp. We visited a charity book shop, a coffee shop and then we were on the way to a restaurant when we spotted a steeple in the distance. My sister immediately made a U-turn so that we could find out what is was.

What we saw in the distance was the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk known as Die Klipkerk.

The Nederduitsch Hervormde Gemeente of Krugersdorp was founded on 1 November 1891. They used the old magistrate’s office and private homes for services. In 1897, the cornerstone of its first church was laid on Market Square by President Paul Kruger. The building, seating 300, was inaugurated in 1898, the first Hervormde church on the Rand.

Under Rev PS Grobler, ordained in 1922, the congregation expanded dramatically. Membership rose from about 400 at the turn of the century to over 2 200 by the late 1930s.

The old church building became inadequate and in 1934, the church council resolved to erect a new structure at considerable cost, engaging renowned architect Gerard Moerdyk. The congregation undertook the construction itself and within ten months, the new church crowned with its distinctive dome, was completed and dedicated in 1935.

The final cost of £13 500 (around R38.5m today) was substantial. The debt was shared among 23 elders.

Information above from the Krugersdorp News article "A look into Krugersdorp church of endurance."

Address : 42 President Street, Krugersdorp

The architect for the church was Gerard Leendert Pieter Moerdijk (1890 - 1958), also known as Gerard Moerdyk. He also designed bank buildings, hospitals, houses and city halls. His architectural masterpiece is the Voortrekker Monument.
